If artist-in-residence is perceived as the exercise of ideology and capital in this globalised society, then Artists Home Swap hopes to develop an alternative, fluid model by displacing the elements involved.

Artists Home Swap (AHS) is a transcultural, interdisciplinary arts exchange program initiated by performance artist Howl Yuan. It currently operates between Taiwan and the UK. AHS facilitates the exchange program by coordinating and matching resources, people, institutions and places. It often works with a host to develop residency and showcase packages based on the context of the place and the host’s need, then invites artists to participate. For a round AHS works with the host in Taiwan to bring UK artists over, and then the next one will be vice versa.

Inspired by “The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" by American sociologist Erving Goffman, the Artists Home Swap Project 2025 explores the presentation of self within communal living contexts, The Presentation of Self in the Common Life. Dance artist Chuang Kai-Wen has been invited to join Interval, an artist community in Bristol, UK, for a month-long residency research.
Goffman’s perspective is distinctive: although beginning from the individual, the self in communal life inevitably reflects the collective image of humanity. Amidst today’s chaotic global environment, the familiar orders and rules established since the end of the Cold War are fragmenting and being reshaped. This compels us to reconsider the relationship between individuals and groups. How do artists converse with society through their practices, and what roles do they assume within communities? How can creativity flourish through interdependence, flowing continuously like a river?
The Artists Home Swap Project anticipates deep reflection, dialogue, and creative exchange between Chuang Kai-Wen and the Interval artistic community.
